BACK COVER
"Set Theory for Improvisation Ensemble Method" is a series of books exploring the relationships of post tonal theory to contemporary improvisation. The series includes a theory book and several ensemble books. The theory book gives the underlying information on how each pitch class set can be applied to contemporary improvisation while the ensemble method gives examples of applying this information in the form of études.
Each étude explores the melodic possibilities using various combinations of note groupings, rhythms, metric level, melodic range and density. There are 12 études in each book, one in each key which can be played over a variety of chords. These études range from highly diatonic to non-diatonic examples depending on the organization of the material.
To facilitate learning this material, the publisher has provided downloadable MP3 vamps of at least one of these chord types that you can use to play along with each example. These examples can be found on the www.muse-eek.com website.
While the ensemble series does give a brief explanation of the melodic content found within it is highly recommended that the "Set Theory for Improvisation Book" be used in tandem with the ensemble series thereby allowing the user to fully understand each étude and the techniques explored within each example.
